"Initially published in 1982 as volume two of the Smithsonian's Folklife Studies series, Thomas Vennum's The Ojibwa Dance Drum is widely recognized as a significant ethnography of woodland Indians. His refreshing undertaking combined aging anthropological field studies with new ethnographic fieldwork and led him deep into the study of the Ojibwa dance drum."

Thomas Vennum served as an ethnomusicologist for twenty-seven years at the Smith-sonian Institution. He is a specialist in Native American music, about which he has published extensively. Rick St. Germaine is a professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
