In contemporary society, judges and magistrates are often viewed as being out of touch, and are subsequently criticised for passing sentences that do not accord with the general public's notion of 'justice'. This book responds to this new challenge by arguing for a more inclusive kind of sentencing which takes into account the diverse views of individuals and communities, as well as how questions of race, gender, access to justice, and rights affect sentencing. It goes on to consider the future role of sentencing in criminal justice, and proposes new criteria through which sentencing can be evaluated within a more socially-inclusive framework.
