Sex, Gender and Science

In Sex, Gender and Science , Myra Hird outlines the social study of science and nature, specifically in relation to sex, sex differences, and sexuality. She examines how Western understandings of sex are based less upon understanding material sex differences than on a discourse that emphasizes sex dichotomy over sex diversity and argues for a feminist engagement with scientific debate that embraces the diversity and complexity of nature.

MYRA J. HIRD is Professor and Queen's National Scholar in Sociology at Queen's University, Kingston, Canada. She is author of Sociology of Science (Oxford University Press, forthcoming), The Science of Social Relating (Palgrave Press, forthcoming), and Engendering Violence (Ashgate Press, 2002); co-editor of Queering the NonHuman (with Noreen Giffney, 2008), Questioning Sociology (with George Pavlich, 2006) and Sociology for the Asking (with George Pavlich, 2003); two special journal issues on science studies, and some forty articles and book chapters on gender, sexuality, and science studies. She has taught a variety of courses on social theory, epistemology, science studies, sex, gender and sexuality in five countries. She is involved in two transdisciplinary multi-member Team grants concerned with health and science studies.
