Early twentieth centuryAlexandria County, now Arlington County and the Del Rey neighborhood of Alexandria, was fraught with crime and corruption.One individual, elected prosecutor Crandal Mackey, made it his sole purpose toclean up Alexandria’s bars, gambling houses and casinos. Armed with a shotgun and accompanied by aposse of supporters, Mackey embarked on his crusade, conducting raidsthroughout the county. Author Michael Lee Pope tells the story of how Mackeyfought crime, idle and apathetic law enforcement and his political opponents inattempt to rid Alexandria of the vice that corrupted it.
