Lyndon Johnson took office in 1963 as the 36th President of the United States. He was sworn into office on Air Force One after the assassination of President Kennedy. Johnson is known for designing the "Great Society" legislation that included laws on civil rights, Medicare, Medicaid, and aid to education. His "War on Poverty" was an attempt to help the nation¿s poor. He encouraged escalation of American involvement in the Vietnam War. This State of the Union Address was given on January 8, 1964.
