This book presents, for the first time, a comprehensive analysis and assessment of the sustainability of the contemporary civil air transport system, examining its three main components: airports, air traffic control, and airlines. It offers an in-depth examination and quantitative insight into the system's current and prospective structure and operations, as well as the related effects and impacts. The sustainability of the air transport system is considered along a global trajectory of growing effects and diminishing and/or stagnating impacts on society and environment under conditions of continuous growth. In doing so, the author examines the situations of users of the system (passengers and freight shippers), air transport operators (airports, air traffic control and airlines), aerospace manufacturers, local and national communities, policymakers and the general public. The book possesses the unique and distinctive feature of providing an analysis and assessment of the air transport system's sustainability through elaboration of its technical/technological, operational, economic, social, environmental and institutional performances and their causality. It is written for advanced graduate and post-graduate students, researchers, planners, stakeholders, and policymakers dealing with the various sustainability issues of the contemporary air transport system.Contents: Preface; The science and policy of sustainability; Performances of the air transport system; Sustainability of the air transport system;Modelling sustainability of the air transport system; Epilogue; Index.About the Author: Dr Milan Janic is an air transport and traffic engineer and planner. He is currently a senior researcher in air transport, and research programme leader of the Transport & Infrastructure section at OTB Research Institute, Delft University of Technology. Before this he held positions at Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), Loughborough University (Transport Studies Group) (UK), and The Institute of Transportation (Ljubljana, Slovenia). Dr Janic has been involved in aviation research and planning national and international projects for about 25 years. He has also written many papers for scientific and professional journals, and conferences, as well as the book 'Air Transport System Analysis and Modelling: Capacity, Quality of Services and Economics'. He is a member of the Delft Aviation Centre (Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands), the Air Transport Research Society (ATRS), and the Airfield and Airspace Capacity and Delay Committee of the Transportation Research Board (Washington DC, USA).
