For us as citizens of Sweden is freedom of speech, freedom of expression and press freedom a natural part of our society. In some countries is press freedom a law on paper but represents something else in reality. The need for information and objective news is a brick stone for a stable democracy. According to us, media have the power to shape and direct the advancement of a society, with that power comes a responsibility to provide a neutral and objective picture of the reality. Guyana provides two independent newspapers, the Kaieteur News and the Starbroek News. When we conducted this research were our objective to investigate which role the free newspapers had in Guyana, the responsibilities they had, and the level of free speech in the newspapers. We have based our empirical data upon qualitative interviews with prominent persons from Guyana's media community. We have also done a participant observation and a content analysis.
