The year 1590 reveals the Genevan republics weaknesses. The war that everyone thought would end quickly continued. The coffers of the city and the public were empty, and their Bernese allies defected through the iniquitous treaty of Nyon. There were, however, a few rays of hope: the Genevans took Gex and the fort of Ecluse. The Bernese renounced the treaty of Nyon, and the Duke of Savoy was bogged down in Provence. Theodore de Beze thus had a few points on which to base his natural optimism. He fervently preached and exclaimed: who would have thought there would still be something to eat in Genevas markets after sixteen months of war? These rays of hope shine throughout his letters.
