Tom Kitwood on Dementia : A Reader and Critical Commentary

The Reader will provide a critical overview of Kitwood's work in relation to dementia. One of the key strengths in Kitwood's approach to dementia was his eclectic background spanning theology, psychology (psychoanalysis and humanistic psychology), moral philosophy, sociology and biochemistry and this will be reflected in the commentaries and readings. Four major themes have been identified, bringing together relevant materials from previously difficult to access sources and excerpts from books. The introduction will provide an overview of Kitwood's work, the development of key concepts and will provide an evaluation of their role in shaping dementia care today. Each section will have a commentary on the theme and an analysis of its development and relevance today. The book will conclude with a comprehensive, annotated bibliography of Kitwood's work. This structure will allow readers to access Kitwood's work by theme and by readership level. Because of the relative inaccessibility of some of Kitwood's work, we think it important to have one resource that brings together such material in a relevant and contemporary way.

Clive Baldwin is Senior Lecturer in Dementia Studies at the University of Bradford, UK. He spent many years working in the voluntary and community sector before undertaking his PhD at the University of Sheffield. Following post-doctoral research at ETHOX, University of Oxford, he joined the Bradford Dementia Group in 2003.
