For the first time in a single, accessible volume, this book traces the Turkic peoples'trajectory from steppe, to empire, to nation-state. Cultural, economic, social, and political history unite in these pages to illuminate the projection of Turkic identity across space and time and the profound transformations marked successively by the Turks' entry into Islam and intomodernity.

Carter Vaughn Findley is Professor of History at Ohio State University. He is the author of Ottoman Civil Officialdom: A Social History and Bureaucratic Reform in the Ottoman Empire: The Sublime Porte, 1789-1922, as well as a co-author of Twentieth-Century World, among other titles. He is a past president of the World History Association and the Turkish Studies Association.
