Twentieth-Century Music Theory and Practice

This twentieth century music theory textbook includes discussions of harmony, scales, rhythm, contour, post-tonal music, set theory, the twelve-tone method, and modernism. This text uses theoretical devices associated with atonality to explore music inclusive of a large number of schools and contains examples by such stylistically diverse composers as Paul Hindemith, George Crumb, Krzysztof Penderecki, Ellen Taffe Zwilich, Steve Reich, Michael Torke, Alexander Scriabin, Ernest Bloch, Ruth Crawford, Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, Sergei Prokofiev, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Aaron Copland, Lukas Foss, Alfred Schnittke, György Ligeti, Leonard Bernstein, Olivier Messiaen, Charles Ives, and Witold Lutoslawski in addition to second Viennese composers Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, and Alban Berg. To show how twentieth century music relates to and builds on past musical traditions, a number of nineteenth century composers, such as Johannes Brahms, Franz Liszt, and Richard Wagner, are covered.
