Value Chains, Social Inclusion and Economic Development: Contrasting Theories and Realities

There is a growing recognition that governance of value chains plays a crucial role in issues of inclusion and endogenous economic growth, but there is as yet little understanding of the relationships between chain governance and development interventions of multiple actors. In practice, neither (inter)national nor local actors always share information and coordinate their actions. This book brings together interdisciplinary and integrative scholarly contributions to look at the links between international firm strategies and locally embedded development processes.This book integrates theoretical perspectives and a variety of empirical to analyse how managerial coordination, regulation, standards impact the inclusion of smallholder farmers and enterprises into governed value chains. The combination of inclusive governance and endogenous development provides the foundation for a grounded debate on the function and nature of development-oriented partnerships as a promising avenue for policy and practice.
