War of the Wolf: Texas' Memorial Submarine: World War II's Famous USS Seawolf

Visitors to Seawolf Park in Galveston seldom realize the submarine they see there is not the famous Seawolf of World War II, but is the submarine Cavalla. Texas' memorial to the lost submarines of the war was named in honor of the famous SS-197, which was lost in October 1944. Under such famous skippers as "Fearless Freddie" Warder and Roy Gross, the Wolf's crew also boldly entered shallow enemy harbors, rescued downed aviators, landed commandos in the Philippines, and pioneered periscope photography such as the photos above. Her war started the day Pearl Harbor was attacked and ended under tragic circumstances.
