Trying to survive the greatest economic hardship since the Great Depression, Stanley Black's existence is dire. Living in a slum, his primary hang-out is the local bar, where he commiserates about the government, corporations, and the damage that has been done to the environment. Despite being a pessimistic, judgmental drunk, Stanley finds himself developing romantic feelings for a married woman; in fact, she is the bartender's wife. Janet brightens the darkness in Stanley's soul, which utterly confuses and challenges his moral beliefs. While continuing to battle his own mind, a mysterious stranger complicates matters further, and Stanley finds himself nearly drowning in a mental maze.
