The Withering of the Welfare State Regression

Since the 1970s the public commitment to social solidarity between citizens through comprehensive provision of welfare has been eroded by the imperatives of international markets. In this volume the problems posed to public intervention are analyzed. The contributors compare and evaluate how different countries have dealt with these challenges.

James Connelly is Professor of Political Theory, Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Hull, UK. He has published extensively on the work of R.G. Collingwood. His other publications include Politics and the Environment: From Theory to Practice (3rd edition, with Graham Smith, David Benson and Clare Saunders, 2011). His edited works include The European Union as a Leader in Climate Change Policy (with Rudi Wurzel, 2011). The Legacy of Leo Strauss (with Tony Burns, 2010) Anglo-American Idealism: Thinkers and Ideas (with Stamatoula Panagakou, 2010) and Ethics Education for Irregular War (with P. Robinson and D. Carrick, 2009). Jack Hayward is Emeritus Professor of Politics, University of Oxford, UK, and Research Professor of Politics, Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Hull, UK. He has previously co-edited The British Study of Politics in the Twentieth Century, edited Leaderless Europe (2008) and written Fragmented France (2007). He is a fellow of the British Academy.
