In a distant future where humanity has mastered interstellar travel and is expanding across the galaxy, the most habitable planets are occupied by the wealthiest countries of Mother Earth, while the harsh and inhospitable planets are ceded to poor nations. A multicultural detachment of corporate mercenaries, made up of both men and women, is tasked with continuing the terraforming—abandoned ninety years earlier under mysterious circumstances—of one of these second-rate planets, Cuicatlán, “the land of song,” a mauve-colored world where the wind whistles permanently in a mournful lament. Terraforming is a simple, automated process, but the planet holds a dangerous secret that has already claimed several lives, and what was supposed to be a routine mission turns into a fight for survival. With a masterful handling of the personal dramas that humans carry with us anywhere in the cosmos, The Cry of the Air transcends the boundaries of science fiction and delivers a dystopia filled with power, emotion, and originality.

Bernardo Fernández, Bef, is a novelist and comic book artist. He has published the detective novel series Tiempo de alacranes (Time of Scorpions), Hielo negro (Black Ice), Cuello blanco (White Neck), and Azul cobalto (Cobalt Blue); the science fiction books Ojos de lagarto (Lizard Eyes), Gel azul (Blue Gel), and Escenarios para el fin del mundo (Scenarios for the End of the World), as well as several books for children and young adult readers. He is one of the most renowned graphic narrative authors in Latin America, with publications such as Espiral (Spiral), La Calavera de Cristal (The Crystal Skull) (in collaboration with Juan Villoro), the graphic humor book ¡Cielos, mi marido! (Heavens, My Husband!), El instante amarillo (The Yellow Instant), Habla María (Maria Speaks: A Graphic Novel About Autism), and Matar al candidatos (Killing the Candidate) (in collaboration with F.G. Haghenbeck). With a handful of awards and translations into eight languages, he divides his time between graphic design, fiction, and comics.
