Frederick Brotherton Meyer was born on April 8, 1847, in London, to a family of German descent. He was a Baptist pastor and one of the most influential preachers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Meyer emphasized evangelism in his writings and the importance of maintaining a balance between personal holiness and an active faith. Like others of his time, he stressed the victorious Christian life, filled with the Holy Spirit, as an experience following conversion, known as anointing or the baptism of power. Not content with a passive faith, Meyer became involved in many controversial issues of his day. As a social reformer, he fought against alcohol abuse, prostitution, and even professional boxing. Author of forty books, Meyer also preached approximately 16,000 sermons, and thousands came to Christ through his ministry. He served as pastor of Christ Church in London and later became a key leader in the Keswick Convention, a religious movement that emphasized total surrender to God, purity, and devotion to Christ. Today, we can be inspired by the passionate devotion to the Lord of this extraordinary man through these meditations, carefully updated for the modern reader.
