The Girl Token is a distinctive memoir of an early childhood that starts, idyllic in its setting of Taiwan with her mother's family, and her subsequent move to the United States where the unsettling abuse begins. As the narrative traverses through Los Angeles, Germany and her return to America, memories of the commonplace childhood during the 1970s is interspersed with vivid details of physical, emotional, and most horrific, the sexual abuse inflicted by the narrator's stepfather. At a holiday gathering with the narrator's mother and half-siblings, the painful memories are shockingly triggered when meeting a young niece, bringing memories of the traumatic assaults to mind.
