Integrating Music Across the Secondary Curriculum

Integrating Music Across the Secondary Curriculum supports middle school and high school teachers as they bring music into the teaching of other subjects. It contains detailed, practical ideas and examples, including full lesson plans and more than one hundred teaching ideas and strategies for integrating music with visual art, language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics. Each chapter is aligned with national educational standards and every lesson and activity has been field tested in secondary classrooms. As well as encouraging partnerships and collaboration between teachers, Integrating Music Across the Secondary Curriculum guides teachers to successfully create their own interdisciplinary lessons. Throughout, there is an emphasis on valid connections between subject areas while maintaining the integrity of each discipline.

Kristin Harney is Professor of Music Education at Montana State University where she coordinates undergraduate and graduate music education programs. She also has 14 years of public school teaching experience. Harney is the Montana representative for the Society for Music Teacher Education and the author of Integrating Music Across the Elementary Curriculum (OUP, 2020).
