ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Agonizing over a decision with the power divide time into a before and after, a woman leaves home and begins walking with no fixed destination. With every step, looks for balance between obedience and self-determination, struggling to shape her thoughts. These include fragments of conversations, testimonies, accusations and secrets, intermixed with tender memories of her husband and the voice of her God.

In The First One Who Walks, Ana Francis Mor reimagines the Old Testament (from Exodus through Kings) with a unique premise as her starting point: after receiving the Annunciation from the Angel Gabriel, Mary decides she needs time to decide whether she wants to conceive the Son of God. Perplexed but intrigued by her will to be free, God allows her to wander for three years. During her travels, she collects a mosaic of stories about the migrations and genealogies of a people that has struggled to survive across seas and deserts.

By creating contrasting narrative voices as Mary oscillates between emotion, logic and doubt, the author weaves an inspiring and mystical story. This reinterpretation of a foundational story of western civilization is a profound exploration of the implications of free will.
