Mac and Cheese Chess

I learned Chess from my Grandfather who like Yoko Ono encouraged a style of play that prioritizes mutual engagement over winning and losing.
I now teach Chess in after school programs with a focus on the social benefits of the game

In medical school we would talk about what specialty to become, and I remember saying "I am not sure what specialty, but it will be something Pediatric."
I ended up being a Pediatric Heart Surgeon which was a skill welcomed around the world. Wherever I went as a volunteer, I operated on children by day, and played Chess with my hosts in the evenings.
My afterschool Chess began at Berkeley Youth Alternative , where I was mentoring , journaling mostly, and one time suggested that I bring Chess boards. That continued weekly for almost 2 decades.
I now have a Chess club in a library or after school program almost every afternoon.
I believe we create our identities through the stories we tell about ourselves.
