Jerrod Danmyer's family was among the first to migrate to Kansas, establish a ranch, and own much of the range near the town of Eden. Ten years ago Stover Gates brought his family to Eden from the coal mines of Ohio, but soon after their arrival Stover's brother Zeb was killed by Jerrod's brother. From then on, Stover shunned the Danmyers and persuaded many of his neighbors to do the same. Over the years nature dealt many setbacks to them, rancher and farmer alike, rich and poor - droughts, bitter winters, a monthlong rainstorm, and now a plague of locusts. Some people see the pestilence as a sign from God, a chance to repent and be more charitable toward their neighbors. Unfortunately, a few see it as an opportunity to line their own pockets, feeding on the misfortunes of others, even resorting to murder to get what they want.
