Sergio Prim, a geographer by trade, has seen how his dream of loving Brezo Varela is coming true, and he has panicked. Throughout the novel he searches for an opening, a point of stillness, an area free of worries. Maybe there he can overcome his difficulty understanding other people’s scale—that is, the way others establish relationships of similarity, distance, or nearness—maybe then he can save his relationship with Brezo.
The Scale of Maps is the story of the fear of being loved and its metaphor, but it is also a reflection about the difference between the things that happen in space and those others that happen in time.
