They look deceptively simple. But clay tiles or plaques are actually one of the most difficult forms of pottery to make by hand. A few gifted Hopi artisans and potters from other Pueblo villages mastered this exacting craft in the late nineteenth century, often selling their work through the Fred Harvey Company, and their unique painted tiles have charmed Southwestern tourists and collectors ever since.
