This story begins in 1925 when Mark Gertler (the East End painter featured in the film Carrington) brings a young girl named Lucia with him to a party at the estate of the eccentric art patron Lady Ottoline Morrell (the model for D.H. Lawrence's, Lady Chatterley.) Virginia's husband Leonard, a normally distant and cold man, is completely captivated by the child. His friends - all members of the intellectual circle The Bloomsbury group, suspect he has fallen in love with the girl - or might it be something even more shocking? Perhaps rumors of Leonard's infidelity are true and little Lucia is his daughter. If so, who is the child's mother?
