This is the third volume in the popular 'Secret Operations' series which provides a graphic account of some of the most famous clandestine military operations of the last century. This volume examines the world famous raid at Remagen Bridge. On 7th March 1945, the world watched as US forces sought to capture this important post, in order to cross the Rhine. The German defenders, realising that their position was in danger, attempted to detonate several demolition charges. The first effort saw the charges fail to explode; the second succeeded only in lifting the bridge from its bearings without destroying it. Following their attack, US forces gained a foothold on the east bank of the Rhine, and although the bridge was destroyed 10 days later, the capture of this important river crossing enabled US forces to establish a strong bridgehead on the east side of the river. This was crucial in forwarding their advance across the heart of Nazi Germany.Written by noted military historian Ian Kemp, and drawing upon a vast array of contemporary source material, this new book provides a detailed picture of the raid, from the men and equipment used, to the tactics adopted, and the ultimate consequences of this historic battle.
