This publication details a study into poverty and insecurity in Colombia, based on qualitative research with 942 people in ten poor Colombian communities, focusing on three topics of work, security and education. Carried out during the summer of 2002, these people shared their experiences, frustrations and hopes for improving their deteriorating livelihood prospects, the pervasive violence afflicting their homes and communities, and the very poor educational and training opportunities available locally. The study also includes a number of recommendations, developed by the communities, designed to bring real improvements to their lives. Key findings arising from the study include the widespread view that that more cohesive and stronger families and local organisations are an important part of prospects for greater peace and development.
