Newcastle Under Lyme

This fascinating collection of over 200 photographs, many of which have never been published before, explores the historic Borough of Newcastle under Lyme. Located at the confluence of several major road transport routes, Newcastle developed as a town following the strategic siting of a castle there in the twelfth century. A large produce market was established outside the castle and, because of this, Newcastle became for centuries the most important town in the area.
