Based on the few known facts regarding the 1651 hanging of Goody Basset (Ruth Paine), the second woman charged with witchcraft in Connecticut, the novel depicts the lonely world of a young woman attempting to reconcile her independent spirit within a strict Puritan society. Although the events take place centuries ago, the focus on religious fundamentalism and the dangers of fanaticism make this tale a parable for our times. This edition is a new design of the original book published in 1984 by Walker Publishing Company, Inc.

Claude Clayton Smith's most recent book is Lapping America: A Man, A Corvette, and The Interstate, published by Burford Books. For his writing on native people both at home and abroad, Smith has been awarded a gold medal authorized by the United Nations committee repsonsible for the "International Decade of Indigfenous Peoples -- 1994-2004." Smith recently retired as professor of English from Ohio Northern University.
