Coronal Seismology Waves and Oscillations in Stellar Coronae

This concise and systematic account of the current state of this new branch of astrophysics presents the theoretical foundations of plasma astrophysics, magneto-hydrodynamics and coronal magnetic structures, taking into account the full range of available observation techniques -- from radio to gamma. The book discusses stellar loops during flare energy releases, MHD waves and oscillations, plasma instabilities and heating and charged particle acceleration. Current trends and developments in MHD seismology of solar and stellar coronal plasma systems are also covered, while recent progress is presented in the observational study of quasi-periodic pulsations in solar and stellar flares with radio, optical, X and gamma rays. Alexander V. Stepanov is the Director of the Pulkovo Observatory and he was an elected member of the European Astronomical Society Council from 2006 to 2010. His fields of research are radioastronomy and plasma astrophysics, in particular solar and stellar flare physics. Valery V. Zaitsev is the Head of the Laboratory of Plasma Physics of the Atmospheres of the Sun and Planets, the Institute of Applied Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences, and a founding Member of the European Astronomical Society. His research centers on solar and stellar flares, radioastronomy, and space plasma physics. Valery M. Nakariakov is Professor of Physics at the University of Warwick, UK, Chair of the UK Solar Physics community and President of the European Solar Physics Division of the European Physical Society. His research focuses on solar coronal physics and MHD coronal seismology.
