The 21st Century Harem: Muslim Women in Post 9-11 America

This book is intended to provide an insight into how Muslim women who live in post 9-11 America construct their perception of themselves as Muslims and Arabs living in the post 9-11 Western world through redefining their gender roles. Certainly, September 11 has created a stressful atmosphere where Muslim women living in Western countries have to struggle against different traditional and innovational forces. They are cough in between traditional patriarchy, and a sense of victim-hood in their hosting communities that are adopting anti-Muslim policies. The Harem, in this sense, is perceived as Muslim women's own space where they try to cope with new changes in their hosting communities, create solidarity, and redefine their gender roles to challenge the wide spread misconceptions about women and Islam. This book is a journey into Muslim women, a world that has been mysteriously and fictitiously depicted in Western literature. It is a voice rising from inside to tell its own story.
