Accountability, Assessment, and Teacher

Education scholars, administrators, and classroom practitioners offer essays, case studies, and proposals in the wake of a 1990 state law that makes high-stakes accountability the centerpiece of education reform. On levels of class and schools, they present various perspectives on the mandated approach to accountability, suggest some alternative routes to the same goal, and generally record their reactions and experiences under the new regime.

Betty Lou Whitford is Professor of Education and Director of the National Center for Restructuring Education, Schools, and Teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University. Ken Jones is Mathematics Specialist at Gheens Academy/Jefferson County Public Schools, Louisville.
