The Age of American Impressionism; Masterpieces from the Art Institute of Chicago

Although renowned for its holdings of works by French Impressionists, the Art Institute of Chicago also houses a wealth of superb examples by American proponents of this distinctive style. The collection includes works by such notable artists as Cecilia Beaux, George Bellows, Mary Cassatt, William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, George Inness, Maurice Prendergast, John Singer Sargent, John Twachtman, and James McNeill Whistler, as well as by lesser-known artists who worked within the Impressionist vein. This beautiful volume features around ninety objectspaintings, watercolors, pastels, and printsseveral of which have never been published, and others that have recently been restored to their original glory. In addition to tracing the development of Impressionism in America, this engaging book also tells the story of Sara Tyson Hallowell, a collector and art agent whose efforts to promote Impressionism through exhibitions in Chicago in the 1880s helped establish the emergent style in the United States.
