Alabama is blessed with tremendous natural wealth that spans aquatic and terrestrial habitats from the Gulf beaches to the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. This great physical diversity produces numerous habitat types and the abundant wildlife species they support. Yet many vertebrate and invertebrate populations in the state are struggling against serious threats, such as habitat loss, dam construction, environmental contaminants, siltation, disease, invasive species, and overcollecting. This volume builds on Volumes 1-3 of the four-volume set by providing detailed information on the general and specific research and management needs of the species within the state that are rated at the highest level of conservation concern. Its message is directed to the professional wildlife researchers and managers, planners, consultants and teachers involved in the study, assessment, and protection of endangered populations of the state. Book jacket.
Ralph E. Mirarchi is William R. and Fay Ireland Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Management at Auburn University.
