On the morning of her seventeenth birthday,any hopes that Gilda Morris might have hadfor a special day are dashed when she hearson the wireless that England has declared warwith Germany. Handicapped from birth, Gildadoes not get an opportunity to do her bit inthe war until four years later. Her neighborand friend, Mrs. Eleanor Wood, determinedlygets Gilda called up to do war work at herhome, Greystone Manor in Warwickshire,where she provides accommodation for airmenstationed at the nearby training field. Withinhours of her service, Gilda is able to forgether own disabilities as she witnesses the manysacrifices made by others. Out from underher mother's critical eye, Gilda begins torealize that there is more to her than herdeformities. She becomes part of a world towhich she had never before been exposed,sees firsthand the vagaries of human nature,and believes that it is almost enough untilshe finds herself very much in love.
