His specific interests are in the fields of entrepreneurship and environmentally compatible economic development Steven C. Deller is a professor of agricultural and applied economics with the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a community development economist with the University of Wisconsin-Extension. His work focuses on modeling the economic structure of rural areas with attention paid to local policies that affect local economic growth and development. His work has appeared in The Review of Economics and Statistics, American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Rural Sociology, and the Journal of the Community Development Society John J. Gruidl is a professor in the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs, Western Illinois University. He directs an internship program in which returned Peace Corps volunteers earn graduate degrees while assisting small Illinois towns with local development projects. His research focuses on effective development policies for local communities, and he has published in the Journal of the Community Development Society, Growth and Change, and the Review of Regional Studies, among others Margaret Hanson works in Census Services housed in the Department of Sociology at Iowa State University. Her principal role is focused on Census data analysis and dissemination to various client groups throughout the state. Her work is directed toward helping communities and groups understand the implications of changing demographics for the state and helping improve public policy decisions based upon relevant and current population and housing data Ronald J. Hustedde is an associate professor of sociology and a rural development specialist at the University of Kentucky. He is also co-research director of the University of Kentucky Appalachian Center. His specialties include public issues education, public conflict analysis and resolution, leadership education, and rural community economic analysis and development Thomas G. Johnson is Frank Miller Professor of Agricultural Economics and a professor of public affairs at the University of Missouri-Columbia as well as the director of the Community Policy Analysis Center. He teaches and conducts research in rural economic development, economic impact analysis, local government finance, rural education, and transportation economics Paul Lasley is a professor of sociology at Iowa State University. His research, teaching, and extension work focus on farm and rural issues at the state and national levels. His principal areas of inquiry include rural development, community studies, and social-demographic patterns and the consequences of these social and economic changes. He is the author or coauthor of more than a hundred professional journal articles, book chapters, and extension publications John C. Leatherman is an associate professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics at Kansas State University and a local government specialist with Kansas State University-Extension. He is the director of the Office of Local Government. His programming and research interests include local economic development policy and practice, local public finance and service provision, and natural resource management Raymond Lenzi is professor and associate chancellor for economic development and directs the Office of Economic and Regional Development at Southern Illinois University (SIU) at Carbondale. He is also the Strategic Research Initiative (SRI) leader for the Illinois C-FAR Rural Community Development/I-FARRM Project and chief executive officer for the Southern Illinois Research park, a hi-tech focused development adjacent to the SIU-Carbondale campus Christopher D. Merrett is an associate professor of geography in the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs, where he conducts research on public policy issues. Recent research publications include articles, reviews, and two books on a range of topics, including rural planning and economic development, cooperatives and community development, the role of value-added agriculture in the rural economy, nonprofit organizations and welfare reform, and the impact of free trade on local communities Lee W. Munnich Jr. is a senior fellow and director of the state and local policy program at the University of Minnesota's Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs. Munnich has thirty-five years' experience with local and state government Mohamed M. Samy is a visiting scholar in the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics, University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign. He is involved in a large study on "Improving Farm Incomes and Rural Communities Through Specialty Farm Products." Greg Schrock is a graduate research assistant with the State and Local Policy Program, and a master's of urban and regional planning candidate at the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota James K. Scott is interim director of Policy Programs and a research associate professor in the Harry S. Truman School of Public Affairs, University of Missouri-Columbia. He has published numerous articles and research reports on rural policy, community policy, and the future of local governance. Scott's research focuses on technology and the changing nature of local governance, and on public participation in community decision making Andrew J. Sofranko is a professor of rural sociology in the Department of Human and Community Development, University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign. For the past twenty-five years his research and teaching have focused on rural economics and demographics and small communities. He is currently involved in research on the effects of a changing age structure on small towns and farming. He has published extensively on demographic trends and their impact on rural areas. Burton E. Swanson, professor of rural development, Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics, at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign, currently directs the C-FAR-funded Value Project, which seeks to improve Illinois farm incomes and rural communities through value-added agriculture. He joined the University of Illinois faculty in 1975 and has carried out assignments in thirty-five countries Norman Walzer is a professor of economics and directs the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University. He has worked on numerous projects with local and state government and has published on local public finance and economic development issues in the National Tax Journal, Land Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, Labor and Industrial Relations Review, and other outlets Kimberly A. Zeuli is an assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and associate director for the University of Wisconsin Center for Cooperatives. Her research, teaching, and extension programs focus on the cooperative model, especially its relevance and application to rural community development
