The question of what makes America has fascinated European observers since time immemorial. While some on the one hand emphasize the respective special way, others saw America and Europe on similar paths. This view was particularly pronounced in the decades after 1945, when the U.S. came to be at the height of its influence. Since the end of the Cold War and since September 11th, transatlantic differences are again emphasized.
