In this groundbreaking study of prehistoric Chinchawas, a small agropastoral community in the North Central Highlands of Peru, George F. Lau provides the first full archaeological investigation of a site of the Recuay culture. Departing from the traditional focus on large regional centers in Andean archaeology, the author investigates the rise, history and demise of groups at Chinchawas (AD 300-900), emphasizing the importance and character of rural communities in complex societies.
