Archaeology and Language I: Theoretical and Methodological Orientations

Until recently, archaeology and historical linguistics have largely pursued separate tracks, although their goals can be similar. While there is a new awareness that these disciplines can be used to complement one another, both rigorous methodological awareness and detailed case-studies are still lacking in these areas. Exploring a wide range of techniques used by experts of both disciplines to reconstruct prehistory,Archaeology and Language Iacts to synthesize the results of these different fields. This collection looks at areas such as the controversial question of when human beings first began to use recognizable languages and what social and psychological changes this implied. It is the first volume in a wide-ranging survey of the links between these two areas of study.
