The Artist's Complete Guide to Facial Expression

This instructional and reference manual is a visual index of facialxpressions. It centres on the muscles of expression and their effects as aasis for understanding and analyzing those expressions they see on modelsnd in photographs. Artists will be aided in understanding expression and inreating expression. The book is organized around three parts - part onenalyzes the basic structures of the head, the fundamental forms of the skullnd recurring proportions, all in preparation for understanding full facialxpression in part three. Part two describes the muscles of expression in thehree key parts of the face. In part three, the basic facial forms from partwo are combined to form the six basic human expressions - joy, sadness,nger, fear, disgust and surprise. Each expression is depicted in steadilyncreasing intensity. Examples of facial images are drawn from a variety ofhotographic art and artistic sources.

Gary Faigin trained at the Art Students League and the Ecole des Beaux Arts de Paris. He has taught at the National Academy School of Design and at Parsons School of Design; currently, he is the artistic director of the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, where he lives.
