Bateford

Arnold Bateford is a middle-class mill-owner, determined to advance his business and family through foul means or fair - starting with an advantageous marriage for his daughter Cynthia. But she is already in love with somebody else. Bessie Cullen is a domestic servant, inspired by the movement for workers' rights, eager to fight for a better life, but at odds with her parents, who fear the consequences of rocking the boat. Her mother and brother both work at Bateford Mill. Two families living so close, and yet worlds apart, but those worlds are now about to collide in a spectacular fashion.
