Beyond the Pale

How should Augustine, Plato, Calvin, Kant, Nietzsche, and Bonhoeffer be read today, in light of postcolonial theory and twenty-first-century understandings? This book offers a reader-friendly introduction to Christian liberationist ethics by having scholars "from the margins" explore how questions of race and gender should be brought to bear on twenty-four classic ethicists and philosophers. Each short chapter gives historical background for the thinker, describes that thinker's most important contributions, then raises issues of concern for women and persons of color. Contributors include George (Tink) Tinker, Asante U. Todd, Traci West, Darryl Trimiew, Ada Mar#xED;a Isasi-D#xED;az, Robyn Henderson-Espinoza, and many others.

Stacey M. Floyd-Thomas is Associate Professor of Ethics and Society at the Divinity School of Vanderbilt University and author or editor of several books, including Mining the Motherlode and Deeper Shades of Purple. She is the Executive Director of the Society of Christian Ethics. Miguel A. De La Torre is Professor of Social Ethics and Latino/a Studies at Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado, and the author or editor of more than twenty-five books. He is the 2012 President of the Society of Christian Ethics.
