Tony was born in Canada but brought up in Middlesborough, UK. In 1977 he came up to Selwyn College, Cambridge, to read natural sciences which he finished in 1980 with a first class honours degree in Physics and Theoretical Physics. During this period he was awarded several College prizes. In 1979 he also went to the Institut Laue-Langevin, in Grenoble, France, to carry out his final year project. This involved the development of a new polarizing monochromator for neutrons upon completion of which he became one of the pioneers of the polarized neutron reflection, important for establishing the magnetic structure of surfaces and multilayers.
