Black men hold a precarious position at both predominantly White institutions of higher education as well as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The graduation gender gap has grown worse in recent years, resulting not only in poor graduation rates for black male students, but also poor graduation rates for HBCUs overall. As a result, many colleges and universities are focusing on increasing retention and persistence rates for their Black male students. In an effort to give these institutions an additional resource to promote success among a diverse student body, Black Men in College seeks to provide practitioners with vital information about how to effectively recruit, support, and retain Black male students.Black male collegians are not a homogenous group, and this valuable edited collection focuses on the rarely acknowledged differences that exist among them. The contributors describe the diverse challenges black men in college face and discuss how to support and retain not only high-achieving Black men, but also gay men, men in STEM, academically unprepared men, men with disabilities, athletes, student leaders, international students, and those affiliated with Greek organizations. Each chapter focuses on the challenges relative to these subcultures and provides detailed advice on how to recruit, support, and retain them.
