Li Wei is Professor of Applied Linguistics at Birkbeck, University of London. He is editor of the International Journal of Bilingualism and author/editor of numerous books and articles, including Three Generations, Two Languages, One Family (1994), The Bilingualism Reader (2000), and Language Learning and Teaching as Social Inter-Action (2007, with Zhu Hua, P. Seedhouse and V. Cook).

Melissa Moyer is Associate Professor of English Linguistics at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. Her current research and publications are concerned with migration and the management of multilingualism. She is author of the award winning book La carcel de las palabras: Ensayo sobre el lenguaje y la desigualdad social (1988, with J. M. de Miguel).

The book will be written by two lead authors and a team of international scholars
All members of the team have been involved in the European Science
Foundation Scientific Network on Code-Switching and Language Contact, and are experienced in designing, implementing and publishing empirical research

The book is arranged into three main parts: Topics, Methods and Tools
There will be a general section at the very beginning of the book on the relationships between Theories, Methods and Data
Topics sets out the key research questions, themes and project ideas
The units within this part are further arranged under Bilingual Society, Bilingual Speaker and Bilingual Speech
Each unit begins with an introduction to the fundamental terms and concepts
It will be followed by a discussion of the research theme and questions, together with an outline of the relevant research paradigms
A list of project ideas, with practical suggestions as to how they could be carried out, will be provided
The project ideas are aimed at the needs of the student who is required to engage with data of some kind, but who is not necessarily expecting to make an original contribution to the field (though some of the projects undoubtedly could lead to this if handled particularly well.)
A list of major journals and reference books is also provided for each unit
Methods contain chapters on specific research methodology, which provide techniques and guidelines on how to set up and run research
It begins with a general discussion on how to set up a research project and choose the appropriate methodology, as well as what counts as bilingual data
The rest of the chapter will follow roughly
The Bilingual Society, The Bilingual Speaker and The Bilingual Speech arrangement, although cross-references will be made where a particular method could be used for different research questions or a variety of methods are needed for a particular question
An annotated list of bibliography of published research that has employed specific research methods will be given
Tools offers a practical guide to the specific procedures and tools for collecting and analysing data
Examples will be given to illustrate the way in which these tools and procedures could be used
A Resource List, including relevant websites addresses, will be provided
There will be a discussion of how to interpret data in the concluding section of the book, as well as guidelines to conference abstracts and journal submission
A glossary and a general reference will be provided
