The six-volume set collects, contextualises, and annotates the most influential, scandalous, and entertaining texts published between 1817 and 1825. This range of dates represents Maga's infancy, when it rapidly established itself as the nation's most outspoken voice for conservative causes and the leading antagonist of all things Whig. The Edinburgh-based monthly was a trenchant critic of the 'Cockney School', an early appreciator of Percy and Mary Shelley, an occasional champion of the middle-aged Wordsworth and Coleridge, and a shrewd commentator on the 'Byromania' that swept Europe. The set benefits from a substantial general introduction and consolidated index. Each volume also has a specialised introduction and there is a 500-1000 word headnote to each text.
