Young Gav has memories that he can't explain--prophetic powers associated with the dark-skinned people of his homeland, the Marshes. And even though he was kidnapped by slave takers as a baby, Gav's experience growing up in slavery was not an unhappy one--he had his sister Sallo, a warm and loving family to serve, and the guidance of the house teacher, who taught Gav that the order of their world is part of an ancient system fostering peace and prosperity.
