Life, it seems, has been good to Will Shakespeare, now the preeminent playwright of his time since the mysterious death of Christopher Marlowe some years before. He still feels the presence of Marlowe, in his dreams, in his waking life - and in his work. Though the spirit is a benevolent one, he wants naught to do with it, or magic, or the faerie. In his heart and soul, he knows that his past contact with the Elven King Quicksilver sparked his talent and changed him forever - but it came at too high a cost.
Then word is brought to him from Stratford that his son Hamnet has disappeared, lost in the forest where Quicksilver reigns. Frantic with worry, ablaze with anger, Will ventures once more into the realm of the unnatural, determined to wrest the boy from the Elven King's clutches. But he finds that Quicksilver is not the culprit - indeed, the elf himself is in dire peril. And now he, Will Shakespeare, must face an inhuman being of dark and dreadful power to save no only his son but all the realm of magic.
