E. Nesbit (1858-1924) lived in England and had dreamed of becoming a poet since she was fifteen years old. After she married and her husband fell ill, it was up to Nesbit to support her small family. For the next nineteen years, she published a number of novels, essays, articles, poems, and short stories. But it was not until 1899 that she became a highly successful children's author with The Story of the Treasure Seekers -- the book that launched her career. Nesbit's groundbreaking style quickly gained her a popularity that has lasted for more than a century. Her many books for young readers include The Magic City, Wet Magic, The Railway Children, Five Children and It, and The Enchanted Castle H. R. Millar (1891-1935) lived in England and intended to study engineering, but abandoned it in favor of art. He illustrated numerous books for children, including nearly all of E.
