Building Confidence in East Asia Maritime Conflicts, Interdependence and Asian Identity Thinking

Today's East Asia is experiencing momentous changes in its economic and security profiles, creating a paradox of unprecedented economic dynamism alongside grave politico-security issues that create a lack of trust and threaten to undermine stability. A case to build confidence in East Asia is more urgent now than ever before. In this book, leading scholars suggest ways to enhance confidence in the region through analysis of East Asia's 'trust deficit': disputes in East and South China Seas, maritime CBMs, the impact of economic interdependence on security, and issues concerning identity and values in Asian thinking.

Kazuhiko Togo is Professor and Director of the Institute for World Affairs, Kyoto Sangyo University, Japan. He served in the Japanese Foreign Ministry dealing with Russian affairs. After his retirement in 2002, he works mainly on Japan's foreign policy, territorial and historical memory issues, and civilizational conflicts in East Asia.

G V C Naidu is Professor at the Centre for Indo-Pacific Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, India. He has published three books and contributed to a number of books and journals on issues related to East Asian affairs, India's relations with East Asia, and maritime security.
